The National Trading Standards Scams Team training: Providing support to fraud and scam victims

The National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team has devised a training package for practitioners. The training is based on best practice, research, expertise, and ideas from members of the NTS Scams Team’s Coercive Control: Supporting Scam Victims Taskforce. There are similarities between domestic abuse victims and fraud and scam victims, and the training will demonstrate how we can use parallels between these groups to support victims. The Taskforce members have guided how we support victims of fraud and scams and the language we use. This training supports our national No Blame. No Shame. campaign as the language we use when talking to, and about fraud and scams victims is important. It highlights the language we use which leads to victims being blamed and shamed and how we can change this and our approach to the support we provide victims.

This training will provide you with the tools needed to enhance your victim support.

What we will be covering:

  • Coerce and control.
  • Statistics, vulnerability and the impact of being a victim of fraud and scams, such as shame.
  • Understanding fraud and scams and how to support scam victims.
  • Case studies.
  • Language.
  • Things you can do and techniques you can use to help victims.
  • Resources.

Key learning objectives:

  • Develop your knowledge of fraud and scams and learn more about the tactics criminals use.
  • Understand the terms “coerce and control” in relation to fraud and scams.
  • Develop techniques to enable you to better support fraud and scam victims.
  • Learn more about language and the impact it can have on a fraud or scam victims.
  • Learn what should we say, what shouldn’t we say?
  • Learn practical techniques when visiting or supporting a fraud or scam victim.

Each session will last up to 1.5 hours, and you will receive 1.5 hours of Continuous Personal Development.

The sessions will have elements of interaction between delegates and the trainer.
